This major bridge replacement project into Fort Wayne, Indiana provides a gateway to the downtown combined with a memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Following the analysis of adjacent parks and downtown context, DLZ prepared concepts for memorializing Dr. King and further developing the bridge into a signature City gateway. DLZ worked closely with the Memorial Committee and other City officials, to develop a preferred design that focused on the pedestrian and vehicular experience. DLZ also aimed at minimizing the impacts to adjacent park properties and the River Greenway.

As a show of support to the victims and their families in France, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge will display the colors of the French flag tonight.
"We all mourn the loss of life and support those who are grieving. Our bridge is a landmark that symbolizes people coming together and I know the citizens of Fort Wayne are mourning just like their brothers and sisters around the world," said Mayor Tom Henry.

Thrilled to unveil the two new plaques installed on the MLK Bridge this afternoon. The new plaques send a strong message of our commitment to ensure Dr. King’s legacy is remembered and that we think of him often.
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bridge was updated Friday with two new, solid bronze plaques facing vehicle and foot traffic on North Clinton Street downtown. The $117,000 investment replaces the 2012 plaques that were showing signs of wear from the natural elements and air pollution. The original plaques were made from aluminum. Mayor Tom Henry said the first attempt to honor King’s legacy didn’t last as long as he had hoped, but the new, double-sided plaques should last about 30 years.Fort Wayne unveils new MLK Jr. Bridge plaques Madelyn Kidd March 22, 2024 in The Journal Gazette newspaper.
