A Wednesday, October 23, 2024 post on the Great Memories and History of Fort Wayne Private Facebook Group by Creager Smith the Fort Wayne City Historian states: The sign is safe and will be restored as part of the agreement stipulations for demolition of Hillcrest School. The school was found to be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, but it's too far deteriorated to be rehabilitated. Because the Fort Wayne Housing Authority is using federal funds for the demolition and new construction, restoration and use of the sign for the new complex is part of the mitigation of the demolition. The sign is safe. Other comments were by a granddaughter of the former owner and others.
October 24, 2024 post on True Fort Wayne Indiana History on Facebook stated: there is good news out of the ruins. The Hillcrest Drive In sign is being restored. 1000sq ft of bricks from the building will be a patio. The name across the front was saved and will be worked into the new 3 story apartment building. And the tips of two of the columns will be part of a bench. Another October 24, 2024 by John Sharp shows a miniature model of the sign. As thousands of Fort Wayne schoolchildren head back to class today, the former Hillcrest School on East Tillman Road sits silent. It hasn't been a school for many years and later served as a photographer's studio. But now, it is vacant and faces an uncertain future.
The property sold at tax sale and was purchased by the Fort Wayne Housing Authority. FWHA would like to raze Hillcrest and build new housing for homeless veterans. Currently, a Section 106 Review is pending to determine if federal tax dollars can be used to reduce this National Register eligible structure to rubble.
ARCH is hopeful that the school can be reused to house veterans. While it is in need of new systems, it is structurally sound and remarkably intact inside. Hillcrest School was designed by the local firm of Goodrich and Griffith. They also designed Elmhurst School, Franklin School, and South Side High School.
