LETTER Letter written James H. English to Isabel, his wife, from Phil. 21 March 1867 My Dearly Beloved Wife & Child. I am well thanks be to God for His great kindness. I hope you are enjoying the same blessing. I am very anxious and uneasy about a letter the day I arrived here. I wrote you telling you of my safe arrival & I expected a letter from you this week. Some day but no. No letter yet last night I dreamed I Meet the letter carrier and that he handed me a letter from be hind his back and when I began to open it I awake & so doomed to disappointment. I hope you recevied mine if not I am sure you are very uneasy if you did not get the last & get this one. Wrote and post the same day. I may get one tomarrow if I do I will write another as soon as I ge it. I am occupied in the day time visiting and begging but at night my thoughts concentrate upon my dear family true it is when we are deprived of the society of those near and Dear to us. We appricatethe value of it more highly, I hope you are not uneasy about me I am enjoying myself as well as I could expect in your absence. My friends & acquaintances are doing all in their power to make me happy during my sojourn among them. This is the first night I have here in Father's house since I came (excepting Sabbath evenings) This night Father is a member of Session visiting some of the members of the congregation. Mr Baer & Father now comes in at this moment so it must stop. Good night the Lord Preserve you. 26 March 1867 now my Dear Wife you will Think it strange I did not finish my letter next morning but I waited from day to day expecting a letter & yesterday so Father and I were in West Philadelphia begging we went down to the postoffice & through curiosity I walked to the list of advrtised letters Remaining unclaimed among hundreds of others I observed English, James I walked up enquired of the clerk, as there are perhaps 40 to 50 in the office, for the letter I examined & found it he gave it to me he asked me where I lived I told him & where I stopped at present I told him he said the letter was not addressed to that Place. I asked premission to see it. I told him it was my sons handwriting and explained the mistake in the address so I took possession of it (as it would have been troublesome to take it out of my hand again) I walked over to a vacant coner of the room opened & read with tears flowing freely. it was providential occurances Thanks God for it. As I was reading Mr. Barr came in. I handed the letter (as he excels in Sympathy & kindness) it has been particularly shown to me since I came. he has a good congregation of nearly 300 members. First Sabbath after I came no preaching by Rev. Barr he being assisting & Brother Minister prayer meeting in the church house full. After singing I was first called upon to lead in Prayer, (being previously Introduced to the Congregation) I merely cite this as an instance of the many tokens of high regard shown me since I came here. I have to cut off. I cannot compley with the many invitations given Father, Mother & I. I must make up my mind about going home. it is more laborious to solicit aid through this City. The bounds are so extended. Father & I has walked from 6 to 7 miles per day in a straight line from where Father lives besides circling around afterwards. The Lord has given me favor beyound my anticipation at this date I have collected (keep this to yourself) $117.00 and has not went into Mr. Barrs congregation yet. The first I ask it was James P Smyth he gave me $10.00 if I am spared to get home I will give you a full history of all the way which the Lord has led me. I will not say when I will leave for home as I wish to do all I can for the church while I am here. I may be home next week & I may not do not be uneasy. I am in good health. Yesterday attended the Philada Presbyterian was cordially received by the ministery & Eldership invited to visit their different Congregations but of course take time. give Little Nancy a kiss for me and all the children. The choicest of my wishes you are never forgotten in our prayers even by strangers in the Congregation." Along the top of page My Dear John I will answer your's again as I must now start out. Father has "wrought" none since I came here in great kindness Cousin J.J. Pollock & S. Smith lets him go with me & continuing his wages. Farewell Dear Isobell for my sake be easy of mind. The Lord will bring us together again Your affectionate husband, Tell Death (signed) James English K----ss Notes by abstractor: The Nancy is Minnie English Barkley. She changed her name when she was in her teens. Mr. Polock could be either J or P and Mr. Smith a S or J. Copied by L B. C The church referred to in the letter is the United Presbyterian, Eighth Presbyterian Church, NE corner 15th & Christian, Rev. W.W. Barr D.D.

BIOGRAPHY The McKeeman Family by Jane Hunter Hodgson
Robert Benjamin McKeeman was the yountest of 12 children born to David C. McKeeman and Margaret Ann McConahey McKeeman. David was born in County Antrim in Ireland on May 21, 1821. Margaret was born in the same Irish county near Bally o' Glaugh on September 9, 1829. The couple was married in Ireland and came to the United States sometime between 1850 and 1851. The marriage of David and Peggy Ann took place in Deffrick, County Antrim on the eighth of February 1850. Records of passage have not been located but it is assumed that the young couple came by way of New York because they first settled in the area of Albany. While in Albany, New York, John was born on May 1, 1852; Maria Catharine was born on July 20, 1853; Margaret was born in 1855; and Jennie was born on January 24, 1856. It was probably between these births that the family relocated to a farm near Hoagland, Indiana. David was a member of the republican party and the Presbyterian church. James was born on November 30, 1860; Nancy was born in 1862; William F. was born on the 27th of March, 1863; Isobel was born March 13, 1865; Alexander was born on April 7, 1867; Ellen was born on March 15, 1869; David was born on February 12, 1871; and Robert Benjamin was born February 27, 1874, the final of 12 children. Margaret was 45 years of age when the last child was born, and David was 53. David died just two years later, but Margaret lived for another 20 years.
BIOGRAPHY Title: The McKeeman, McConahey family / Author: Hower, Maryellen Larimore. compiled by Maryellen Larimore Hower. Pub info: Ottertail, MN : M.L. Hower, 1990. Subjects: McKeeman family. McConaghy family. Notes: "1 June 1990." Includes bibliographical references. DAVID AND MARGARET (MCCONAHEY) MCKEEMAN by Maryellen Larimore Hower David was born in Northern Ireland, 21 May 1821, son of William McKeeman. He married Margaret Ann (Peggy) McConachy, daughter of John McConachy, 8 February 1850 at Croaghmore Presbyterian Church, Ballintoy Parish, County Antrim. The marriage record shows David's occupation as farmer and his residence as Ballyoglough. Margaret, born 9 September 1829, was a resident of Deffrick. Both their fathers were farmers. Margaret's father, John, was present at the marriage. David was literate, as he signed the certificate. As was usual in those years in Ireland, daughters were not educated and Margaret signed with her mark, X. Research into available passenger lists has not shown when David and Margaret came to America. Their first child was born April 1851 in New York, according to the 1870 Indiana Census record. Immigration must have been between Feb 1850 and April 1851. They lived in the Albany, New York area for several years before migrating to Indiana. It can be assumed that they came to Indiana because Margaret's brother and two sisters had already settled in the Hoagland area by that time. Sisters Nancy Kerr had immigrated to America in 1843 and Isobel English in 1847. David and Margaret came to Indiana between 1853 and 1861. The 1870 Indiana Census lists their son, John, as born in New York and the rest of the children born in Indiana. The 1880 Census states (John dead and Catherine married) Margaret and Jennie as born in New York. How they traveled to Indiana can only be assumed. As they lived in New York, they could have gone by river and canal to Lake Ontario, thru Lake Erie to Toledo, then by river and Wabash & Erie Canal to Fort Wayne. If not by the Canal, then by wagon. If they came later, they could have traveled by railroad. They purchased land near Hoagland on arrival, and sold 40 acres to Conrad Miller in 1864. The 1875 Allen County Atlas shows they owned 160 acres. James and Isobel (McConahey) English owned 189 acres west of them. Hugh and Nancy (McConahey) Kerr owned 77 acres, southwest of them. John McConahey owned 116 acres immediately south of Hoagland. David and Margaret's oldest child, John, born April 1851, died by drowning 23 March 1876. He is buried IOOF Cemetery, New Haven, Indiana. On 24 May 1876, two months after John's death, David McKeeman died. He is buried IOOF Cemetery, New Haven, Ind. Margaret was left with 10 children at home, the youngest, Robert only 2 years old. The 1880 Indiana Census states 9 children still at home. James, 17 years old, William, 15 years old and Alexander, 12 years old worked on the farm. Also listed is Stephan McConaha, laborer, age 25, born Ohio, parents born Ireland and Ohio. Stephan must have been Margaret's nephew, son of John McConahey. David died intestate and in 1882, the heirs applied to the Allen County Circuit Court for permission to sell land of value $1700 to pay debts of the estate. At that time there were 7 minor children. Margaret died 9 September 1894. She is buried IOOF Cemetery, New Haven, Indiana. Her will was probated 20 March 1896. It is probable that Gaelic was spoken in the home. Margaret Kerr, daughter of Nancy McConahey Kerr, and neice of Margaret McKeeman, was not allowed to attend school in Hoagland in 1851 until she could speak English.

Nancy was born in 1862. She married Robert Mercer on February 28, 1876. Robert's grandfather came from Amsterdam, Holland to Hancock County, Ohio. Robert's father attended the "select" school at Middleton and was a leader in the singing school in young manhood and moved to Allen County, Indiana in 1858.
Aunt Nancy lived in a large farmhouse near Poe. Her house was known as a place for the family to gather and there were always "good eats." Poe did not have a grocery store or even a gas pump.
THE PICTORIAL HISTORY OF FORT WAYNE INDIANA. Page 393, Robert Mercer, though a painter and decorator by trade, has devoted his energies mainly to the farming industry, in which he has achieved a very creditable success and is counted among the foremost men of his community today in point of his accomplishments in agriculture. He was born in Hancock county, Ohio, on May 31, 1854, son of Jacob and Harriett (Whitcomb) Mercer. The father came from Amsterdam, Holland, as a small boy, in company with his parents, and with them settled in Hancock county, Ohio. He devoted himself to farm life and as a young man bought an eighty-acre farm, which he later sold and came to Allen county, Indiana, settling in Marion township in 1858. He bought a farm of eighty acres, to which he later was able to add a purchase of three forties, and for years was counted among the foremost farming men of his community. He was a Democrat in politics and a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. He had three children--Robert, Eliza Jane and Rebecca. The first named is the subject of this brief family sketch. The second married William Van Horn and is now deceased, while Rebecca is the wife of Michael Flaugh, a Madison township farmer. Robert Mercer attended the public schools of Marion township and was also priveleged to attend what was known as a "select" school at Middletown. He was the leader of a singing school for some years in young manhood and continued on the home farm until he was twenty-three years old. He then bought eighty acres of farm land in his home community and settled down to farm life, which industry has claimed the greater part of his energies up to the present time. He is one of the well-thought-of men of his township and his standing is excellent wherever he is known. A Democrat, he served his party as delegate at two National Conventions and has always taken an intelligent interest in local politics. He and his family are members of the Methodist Episcopal church and he is a Scottish Rite Mason, affiliated with Masonic bodies in his home village of Poe and also in Fort Wayne. He was married on February 28, 1876, to Miss Nancy McKeeman, daughter of David C. and Marguerite (McConahey) McKeeman, who came from Ireland and who were well-to-do farmers of Hoagland, now both deceased...Nancy is the wife of the subject and Robert B. is a practicing physician in Fort Wayne. To Mr. and Mrs. Mercer five children were born. David J. is engaged in medical practice in Poe, and brief mention is accorded him in other pages of this work. Robert F. is located in Fort Wayne. Marguerite May is deceased. Verba E. is the wife of Charles Scherer and Leslie Bud is at home with his parents. Doctor Mercer has three children--Charles Robert, David John and Harriett Elizabeth. Robert also has three children. Margaret, deceased daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mercer, was married and left a son, Delbert. Verba is the mother of four, named Pearl, May, Alberta and Ruth. The Mercer family, it will be seen, is one that has contributed full measure to the development of the county, and the individual members are living well up to the standards set for them in their early homes.

THE PICTORIAL HISTORY OF FORT WAYNE INDIANA. Page 376, Robert B. McKeeman, M.D. has found in his native county ample field for successful achievement in his exacting profession and has won secure place as a representative physician and surgeon in the city of Fort Wayne. He was born near Hoagland, Allen county, on February 27, 1874, a son of David C. and Margaret (McConahey) McKeeman, natives of County Antrim, Ireland. David C. Mckeeman was reared and educated in Ireland and came to America when a young man. He remained for a time in the vicinity of Albany, New York, and then came to Indiana and purchased a farm near Hoagland, Allen county. He became one of the prosperous exponents of agricultural and live-stock industry in this county and here he and his wife passed the residue of their lives--possessed of those sterling attributes of character that invariably beget popular confidence and respect. Mr. McKeeman was a Republican in politics and both he and his wife were lifelong members of the Presbyterian church. Of their children the first three--John, Catherine and Margaret--are deceased; Jennie is the wife of Henry Dauer, of Decatur, this state; Nancy is the wife of Robert Mercer, of Poe, Allen county; Belle and James are deceased; William, Alexander, Ella and David C. Jr., reside in Fort Wayne; and Dr. Robert B., of this review, is the youngest of the number. Passing his childhood and early youth on the home farm, Doctor McKeeman made good use of the advantages of the public schools in the village of Hoagland and thereafter attended Taylor University, at Upland, this state, and the normal school at Marion. After two years of successful service as a teacher in the schools of Allen county he was able to follow the course of his ambition and to enter the Fort Wayne Medical College, which is now an integral part of the medical department of the University of Indiana. In this institution he was graduated in 1897, and, after thus receiving his degree of Doctor of Medicine, engaged in practice at Monroe, Adams county, where he remained until 1900, since which time he has been engaged in practice in Fort Wayne, where he has developed a substantial and representative professional business. The Doctor is identified with the Allen County Medical Society. His political allegiance is given to the Republican party, he and his wife are members of the Third Presbyterian church of Fort Wayne, and in the time-honored Masonic fraternity he has received the thirty-second degree of the Scottish Rite. October 5, 1897, was made an eventful day in the life of Doctor McKeeman, since then was solemnized his marriage to Miss Susan M. Hocker, a daughter of Joseph and Jesteen Hocker, of Monroe, Adams county, and the four children of this union are L. Stanford, Lillian Theodosia, Donald H.C. and Ruth Beatrice.
A LIFE STORY Robert Benjamin McKeeman Written by Jane Anne Hunter Hodgson This twelfth child of David C. McKeeman and Margaret Ann McConahey McKeeman was born on February 27, 1874 in Hoagland, Madison Township, Allen County, Indiana. His mother was 45 and his father 53 when he was born. His dad lived only for two years after he was born. The young Robert lived on the family farm near Hoagland and attended public school in Hoagland. Robert loved his studies and went on to attend Taylor University in Upland, Indiana and the Indiana State Normal School in Marion, Indiana. He taught school in his native county from 1892 to 1894. In 1894 he enrolled in the Fort Wayne Medical College, graduating in 1897. There were 15 or 16 students in his medical class. Robert first established a practice in Monroe in Adams County, Indiana. It was in Monroe that he met Susie May Hocker, born May 13, 1880, the daughter of the local druggist. The two were married on October 5, 1897 at the home of Ed and Maggie Coffee in Decatur, Indiana. He was 22 and she was 16 at the time. They lived in Monroe in a cottage behind her father's drugstore. The first child, Leland Stanford McKeeman, was born on November 28, 1898. This firstborn went on to become a medical doctor like his father. The young couple moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1900 where Dr. McKeeman hung out his first shingle at 1608 Calhoun Street. Lillian Theodosia was born on July 11, 1901. The family lived on Creighton Avenue near Fox for a short time but had moved to Broadway near the railroad by the time their daughter was born. They built a home at 2020 Broadway and the young doctor operated his office out of the home with the able assistance of his young wife. On January 12, 1904 a second son was born, Donald Harry Cook McKeeman, who also later became a medical doctor and practiced obstetrics and gynecology in Fort Wayne. The family attended the Third Presbyterian Church at the corner of Creighton and DeWald Streets along with many of the other families of the McKeeman clan. Ruth Beatrice was born on April 18, 1907 and the family had been completed. Dr. McKeeman was a member of the Scottish Rite, a 32nd degree Mason, and a Republican. He belonged to the American Medical Association, the Indiana State Medical Society, the Fort Wayne Academy of Medicine and he was the vice-president of the Fort Wayne Medical Society. The children attended Minor School and the Fort Wayne High School. The family spent the summers at Clear Lake. In 1921 the family built a new house at 721 Packard Avenue. At that time the doctor moved his office into the Wayne Pharacal Building at the corner of Berry and Ewing. The first child to marry was Lillian Theodosia, "Doad." She married James Boyd Hunter on November 1, 1925 at the Third Presbyterian Church by Rev. H.B. Hostetter. Their first three children were born at Lutheran Hospital: Donald James Hunter was born December 19, 1926; Maurice Edward Hunter was born October 25, 1930; and Joseph Richard Hunter was born November 26, 1931. This youngest son died February 21, 1936 of scarlet fever and the other two brothers barely survived. The fourth child, Jane Anne Hunter, was born June 8, 1943. In 1927 Robert and Susie took a trip to California. They left Doad and Jim in charge of the household. While they were away, much to the dismay of the older sister, Ruth Beatrice eloped and married Paul O'Neill Cottrell at the parsonage of the Third Presbyterian Church by Dr. James L. Chestnut. Jim, being a practical jokester, locked the couple in the bedroom all night long. The parents must have been surprised at all of the commotion upon returning from their trip. Ruth and Paul had one son, Robert Franklin Cottrell who attended Indiana University Medical School and became an anesthesiologist in Fort Wayne. Paul worked for the A&P Groceries in Toledo, Ohio and returned to Indiana to own a grocery store at Lake George. When the family returned to Fort Wayne he was a business real estate broker. When the sons (Stan and Don) grew up they were sent off to medical school at Indiana University in Indianapolis. On November 20, 1927 Leland Stanford married Mary Grace Keenan at the Cathedral in Fort Wayne with Father Conroy officiating. This physician practiced medicine in Fort Wayne and had three children: Grace Joan was born on November 20, 1927; Mary Ellen was born on September 18, 1935; and Leland Stanford, Jr. was born. Donald met a student nurse name Eula Ruddell from Sullivan, Indiana. They were married on June 11, 1929 in Sullivan, Indiana by Rev. Courts the pastor of the Christian Church. They came back to Fort Wayne where he practiced medicine. Their first daughter, Marilyn was born in 1932. A second daughter, Ann, was born November 20, 1935 and only lived for two days. Their third daughter, Charlotte Sue, was born on October 22, 1938 at Lutheran Hospital. After a complicated delivery she was found to have heart defects and mental retardation. The couple devoted their lives to raising Susie and she preceded them in death. Robert saw two grandchildren die in 1935 and 1936. He conducted the practice of medicine until a few days before his death from influenza on March 4, 1937 at age 63 years and 5 days. Funeral services were conducted at the family residence by Rev. William N. Vincent of the Third Presbyterian Church with only the family and members of the Fort Wayne Medical Society attending. Burial was at Lindenwood Cemetery with pallbearers: Dr. Herbert N. THE 1979 HISTORY OF ADAMS COUNTY, INDIANA. Robert B. McKeeman, M.D., was born at Hoagland, Ind. the son of David C. and Margaret (McConahey) McKeeman. He attended the local schools in and around Hoagland until 1891. At that time he attended Taylor University located at Upland, Ind. In 1892, he attended Marion College at Marion. From 1893 until 1895, he taught school in Hoagland and in 1895, he entered the Fort Wayne Medical College, graduating in 1897. After completing medical school, he moved to Monroe, to begin the practice of medicine. At Monroe he met Miss Susie May Hocker, and in 1897 they were married. The parents of Susie Hocker were Joseph and Justine Hocker. Joseph Hocker was the druggist in Monroe. In 1900, Dr. McKeeman left Monroe and moved to Fort Wayne. Dr. and Mrs. McKeeman were the parents of four children: L. Stanford, Theodosia, Donald and Ruth. His two sons followed in the medical profession, both graduating from the Indiana University Medical School, one in 1924 and one in 1929. Dr. Robert McKeeman was a member of the Allen Co. Medical Society, the Tri-State Society of Medicine, the Indiana State Medical Society, and The American Medical Society. He was a lifetime member of the Presbyterian church. In politics, he was a Republican. He was a Blue Lodge Mason, 32nd degree Scottish Rite, and a member of the Shrine organization. Dr. McKeeman died in 1937, and was buried in Lindenwood cemetery at Fort Wayne. His wife, Susan, died in 1962, and is also buried at Lindenwood cemetery.
HISTORY OF THE MAUMEE RIVER BASIN. Among the native sons of Allen county who have here attained gratifying recognition and success in the medical profession is the subject of this review, who is one of the representative physicians and surgeons of the younger generation in the city of Fort Wayne, where he has his office at 1608 Calhoun street, and his residence at 2020 Broadway. Dr. McKeeman was born in the village of Hoagland, Madison township, this county, on the 27th of February, 1874, and is a son of David C. and Margaret A. (McConnaha) McKeeman, both of whom were born in Ireland, whence they came to America with their respective parents when children. The father followed the vocation of farmer until the time of his death, in 1876. His widow survived him by many years, her death occurring in 1894. They became the parents of twelve children, of whom eight are living. Dr. McKeeman secured his preliminary educational discipline in the public schools of Madison township, after which he availed himself of the advantages afforded in Taylor University, in Fort Wayne, and the Indiana State Normal School at Marion, after leaving which latter institution he devoted his attention to teaching in the schools of his native county for a period of two years, meeting with marked success in his pedagogic labors but utilizing this profession simply as a means to an end, as he had decided to adopt the calling to which he is now devoted. In 1894 he was matriculated in the Fort Wayne College of Medicine, in which well equipped institution he completed the prescribed courses in medicine and surgery, being graduated as a member of the class of 1897 and receiving his degree of Doctor of Medicine. In view of his standing in his profession it is pleasing to revert to the fact that he is not only a native of Allen county but also, that he received his technical training in a local institution. Immediately after his graduation the Doctor opened an office in Monroe, Adams county, and while he was necessarily called upon to serve the customary novitiate in his profession it was not unduly prolonged, and his success and prestige have been cumulative in character, so that he stands well to the front among the able, popular and successful young physicians of his native county, giving his attention to general practice. He remained in practice in Monroe until 1900, when he located in Fort Wayne, where he has since followed the work of his profession. he is a close and appreciative student, being duly conservative in his attitude but ever standing ready to avail himself of those agencies and advanced methods which meet the approval of his judgment. He is an affiliate of the American Medical Association, the Indiana State Medical Society, the Fort Wayne Medical Society and the Fort Wayne Academy of Medicine, and he finds time and opportunity to avail himself of the advantages of each. Though never active in the realm of practical politics, the Doctor is a stalwart supporter of the cause of the Republican party and he is essentially progressive and public-spirited as a citizen. On the 5th of October, 1897, Dr. McKeeman was united in marriage to Miss Susie May Hocker, of Monroeville, and they have three children, Leland Stanford, Lillian Theodosia and Donald Harry Cook.

IN MEMORY The Twenty Third Psalm The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures. He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul; He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me, thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. THE PICTORIAL HISTORY OF FORT WAYNE AND ALLEN COUNTY INDIANA by B.J. Griswold.
