Today is the 12 year anniversary of the Line of Duty death of Mark A. Haudenschild II. Mark was killed in a tanker roll over accident while responding to a reported fire on November 11, 2012 at 8:40pm. Born in Fort Wayne‚ he was a second-generation firefighter with the Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department‚ where he served as an assistant chief engineer for five years. He was motivated by a desire to help others in their hour of need. Known as ‘Mr. Fix It’ by his family‚ Mark also put his talents to use doing maintenance on some of the fire department rigs.
We want to take this moment to remember our fallen brother and carry on his desire to help others. Mark may be gone, but he will never be forgotten. #686

This month is a mile stone for 7 of our firefighters as they completed their probationary/“rookie” year. Over the last 3 days, these individuals received their helmet fronts from Chief Boren and are no longer probationary firefighters. The past 12 months these firefighters have trained hard and passed all the expectations of a probationary firefighter to move to the rank of Private. It is customary with in our district that at the completion of someone’s rookie year, they climb our 100 foot aerial truck to the bucket where Chief Boren is waiting to greet them. It is there where the Chief and firefighter have a moment to reflect back on the last year and help set the tone for the rest of their career. After the talk, Chief Boren assists the firefighter with removal of the probationary shield and placement of their new shield signifying them as a full-fledged firefighter. The firefighter then descends from the bucket to be greeted by their crew on the ground. Chief Boren reminds all the firefighters that “the new shield does not represent perfection rather it represents the everlasting pledge to pursue perfection.” It is with great pride we would like to congratulate -

It has been a busy and exciting week for the Northwest Fire District. On Monday, February 10th, 10 individuals started their new career with our fire district. These 10, already certified, firefighters make up our Academy Class 25-01. Day 1 was a simple day with orientation, HR related topics, uniform/gear fitting, introduction to our Local 124 IAFF Union, and ended with a dinner where family was invited to discuss critical incident stress management. The rest of the week was filled with morning chores, SCBA skills, gear drills, floor to door drills, hose line advancement, hydrant drills, ladders, forcible entry, search and rescue, gas powered saws, and each day either started or ended with group physical training. Our district has been lucky to offer this 4 week academy to assess the skill levels of all the new recruits and to help introduce them to equipment and operations within our district. Each day, off duty staff assist with instruction and physical training, all designed to push everyone mentally and physically to their limits. All the while, showing them how to overcome those limits and find more when it's needed the most. The main goal is to help each recruit build confidence and be successful as a firefighter within our district. Each week, we will post updates on the progress of Class 25-01 to show pride within our newest firefighters.

Today was a busy day for the Northwest Fire District. At 2:50pm, crews were called to their second structure fire, for the day, in the 5100 block of Willow Bluff Trail on the north side of Huntertown. Just before crews were dispatched, a near by resident noticed smoke and flames coming from his neighbor's garage. He then went and was able to alert the homeowner that his house was on fire and the homeowner was able to safely escape the home unharmed. While responding, Fire 91 noticed a large column of smoke and had communications dispatch out a tanker response for additional water tankers due to the fire being in a non-hydrant location. Fire 91 arrived on scene and marked the fire a working fire and took Willow Bluff Command while Engine 91 arrived and started an aggressive fire attack. Battalion 90 took command and other units arrived shortly after to assist in firefighting duties. It took crews nearly 50 minutes to get the fire under control due to building construction and the fire being in several void spaces. One firefighter was treated and released on scene due to an injury from burns. The home is deemed a total loss and the fire is still under investigation. Crews from Churubusco Fire Department assisted on scene while other crews from other Allen County Fire Districts and Territories assisted in either water tankers or standing by in stations with fire engines and ambulances to ensure proper coverage for future calls. Crews returned to service shortly after 6pm and all units on stand by returned to their respective stations.

Academy Class 25-01 successfully wrapped up week 3 where all recruits were evaluated on their skills in patient assessment, auto extrication, and rescue tool operation. In addition to all the fire, EMS and rescue skills, the Academy class has been working hard on their PT each day. With all this hard work, the academy class is building a tight bond to help push each other to improve. With graduation in sight, the recruits were given their shift and station assignments that they will start on March 10th.

LARGE FIELD FIRE FOR NORTHWEST FIRE DISTRICT – MULTIPLE AREA DEPARTMENTS ASSISTED
Earlier today, a controlled burn quickly escalated, spreading across nearly 100 acres of brush and woods. The fire extended well beyond the field and moved dangerously close—within 100 feet—to several homes.
Thanks to the coordinated efforts of five fire departments, the fire was brought under control in approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, with an additional 1 hour and 30 minutes spent extinguishing hot spots and preventing further spread.
Mutual aid responding agencies included:
Northeast Fire District
Southwest Fire District
LaOtto Fire Churubusco Fire
Allen County Sheriffs Department
Allen Co. DHS Air Support UnitA total of 11 grass rigs, 2 engines, 5 tankers, and 2 ambulances were utilized in this operation. Due to the scale of the incident, command had to quickly adapt, dividing the scene into separate divisions and establishing a larger command structure using three operational radio channels.
We want to thank all the firefighters and emergency personnel who responded swiftly and worked tirelessly to contain the fire. No homes or structures were damaged during the fire.
Reminder: Controlled burns can spread quickly under the right conditions. Please use extreme caution and always check local burn regulations before starting a fire.
