The Indiana State Library recently launched Indiana Legacy, which combines many of the library's most popular online indexes into a database containing over four million entries covering vital records, newspapers, marriage indexes and more. This database is free to use and may be accessed from any computer.

The database incorporates existing Indiana State Library databases with the Vital INformation Exchange (VINE), a collaborative statewide database composed of Indiana local history and vital records from Indiana libraries, historical societies, genealogy societies and related organizations.

Indiana Legacy combines existing Indiana State Library databases with the Vital INformation Exchange (VINE), a collaborative statewide database composed of Indiana local history and vital records from Indiana libraries, historical societies, genealogy societies, and related organizations. It is designed to allow participants and users to obtain access to Indiana local history and vital records through searching across all indexes or a single index. The database is searchable by county, event, or through a general surname search of all records. These records are available to the public at no charge and include a host of records such as: birth, marriage, death, divorce, obituaries, court records, newspapers, scrapbooks, yearbooks, military records, and many other record types.

#OTD in 1825, the Indiana General Assembly approved an act that established the Indiana State Library to serve state officials and legislators in Indianapolis. An 1895 law placed the State Board of Education in charge of library management and, according the State Library Website, the library experienced a “large increase in material, service, and usefulness, as it also witnessed the beginning of the spread of popular libraries throughout the state."

The General Assembly approved an act in 1925 that merged the Indiana Historical Bureau, State Library, and Legislative Bureau into the Indiana Library and Historical Department. In 1929, legislators authorized a tax levy for a new dedicated library and historical building. Land was later purchased for this purpose at corner of Senate Avenue and Ohio Street. Construction took several years, and the building opened in 1934.

According to the library’s website, "Through its history, the Indiana State Library has developed strong collections in the fields of Indiana history and culture, Indiana state government and United States government publications, Indiana newspapers, genealogy and family history resources on Indiana and the eastern United States."
