Jordon was at the Fort Wayne Marriott Hotel for his May 29, 1980 address to the Fort Wayne Urban League Equal Opportunity Dinner. Briefly discussed in A Brief History of CNN’s First Day on the Air, 35 Years Ago by Jennifer M. Wood published June 1, 2015 on MentalFloss.com. See our May 29, 1980 Vernon Jordan Timeline.

President Jimmy Carter was not only a great president, humanitarian, but also a compassionated leader. When Vernron Jordan, National Urban League Executive Director was shot in Fort Wayne after speaking at the Fort Wayne Urban League's Annual Fundraiser by Earl Franklin, a White Supremacist, Presient Carter flew to Fort Wayne to see about a fellow Georgian inspite of Vernon's speech criticizing Carter's commitment to the Black community. Thank God for Dr. Towels and his team that saved Vernon's life. The power of community love and prayer.
