Description: Perhaps no other funeral home in Fort Wayne has connected with so many people than this location. The building at 420 West Wayne Street was designed by local architects Wing & Mahurin (Bass Mansion, old City Hall) and built as a home for the Hon. Robert and Clara Bell in 1893. It was sold in 1926 to Klaehn Funeral Home. Another local architect, A.M. Strauss (Lincoln Tower, Embassy Theatre and the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum) designed an addition on the west side of the home that was completed in 1935. The funeral home opened several locations including South Anthony and Winchester Road. Eventually it became known as Klaehn, Fahl and Melton Funeral Homes and part of the Dignity Memorial group. In late 2018 this location at 420 West Wayne was put up for sale for nearly $700,000.
"The three-story building contains 14,130 square feet and features original hand-carved woodwork, fixtures and other historic features. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 and designated a local historic district in 1995, meaning it can’t be torn down or have its exterior altered without the city’s permission."
Their 420 West Wayne Street building closed October 1, 2018. Designed by the prominent firm of Wing and Mahurin and built in 1893 as the home of attorney Robert Clark Bell and his wife Clara, the limestone Romanesque building at 420 W. Wayne St. had been a funeral home for the past 92 years. Operations were transferred to other local facilities. Founded 1876, John Julius Klaehn was born in Saxony in Germany and with his Alsatian wife Wilhelmina immigrated to the United States in 1852. Around 1861 or 1862 he established his own cabinet and furniture manufacturing business on Harrison Street in Fort Wayne. Klaehn’s West Main Street shop, which featured a large and distinctive sign, was a local landmark. In 1876 Klaehn became a junior partner to Henry B. Hall in Hall & Klaehn, an undertaking establishment. Copied from Klaehn, Fahl, & Melton Funeral Homes at Indiana History.org archived on the Internet Archive Wayback Machine.

Eikenberry Funeral Home
2730 East State Blvd.
Fort Wayne, Indiana
For while the colonial structure at Beacon and State was a medical office building it was originally built to serve those who were beyond the ministrations of health professionals. It was originally built in the 1950's to serve as the north chapel for the Getz & Eikenberry Funeral Home. The main location of the funeral home, founded as Getz and Cahill in 1908, was located at 2300 Fairfield Avenue and Creighton Avenue.
The building was only used as a funeral home for a brief time. The north funeral home closed a relatively short time after opening and it then assumed the role of housing medical service. The Eikenberry Funeral Home was incorporated in 1958 and was operated at 2318 Fairfield Avenue until 1974. Copied from Mitch Harper's Fort Wayne Observed blog archived on the Internet Archive Wayback Machine when the building was donated by Parkview Hospital to the Fort Wayne Police Department for new Northeast outpost. His answer to a comment about Harper Funeral Home in New Haven: great-grandfather founded the firm in 1889. I grew up on the second floor of the funeral home. My brother continues the tradition of Harper family service in its 120th year.
The building had been the Getz & Cahill Funeral Home (founded in 1908). Briefly it was the Getz & Eikenberry Funeral Home until the there had to be a bit of reorganization in 1958.
Merle Eikenbery restarted the FH in the next building to the south in 1958 (2318 Fairfield) and Loos moved into the former Getz & Cahill location shown above. The 2318 location lasted until 1974.
Eikenberry built a second location at Beacon and State (which became an orthopedics office and is now a NE quadrant FWPD location) until it closed shortly after it opened.
